The Shinkansen (bullet train) runs from Tokyo. Trains terminating at Shinjo will stop in Murayama. Trains terminating in Yamagata city will not. From Yamagata city you will need to take a local train to Murayama. The bullet train costs around 11,000 yen and takes about 3 and a half hours.
See the JR websiste for more details.
Night buses are also available from Tokyo, prices vary, but are generally around 5,000 yen one way. As with the shinkansen, buses going to Shinjo will stop in Murayama whilst buses stopping in Yamagata city will not. From Yamagata city you will need to get a local train (40 minutes about 500 yen).
From Murayama station, leave by the East exit (all buses stop at the East exit too) and walk up to the traffic lights. Turn left at the traffic lights and walk through the town. At the next set of traffic lights go straight on. Keep walking for about 300 yards and you will see the Komeyakata guest house on the right hand side just before another set of traffic lights.
If in doubt ask a friendly local!
